Billions in Education Credits Paid in Error by IRS

The IRS has paid out $5.6 billion in education credits to over 3 million people who are not actually entitled to claim them, J. Russell George, Treasury Inspector General, has said in a new report. Taxpayers are able to offset their educational costs through these credits, which have become a major part of Federal higher education policy. These erroneous payments have happened, and will continue to happen, because the IRS have yet to implement previous recommendations made to them. Therefore, bogus claims will still be paid because, as the report states, “many of the deficiencies… previously identified still exist.”
