Understanding How U.S. Unemployment Statistics are Calculated

The U.S. Department of Labor made headlines recently with its report that the current unemployment level in our nation is a mere 5.6%.

Unfortunately, the official unemployment rate as calculated by that department counts people who work odd jobs like cutting grass and selling trinkets online as employed people. Additionally, people who have stopped looking for work out of frustration are not factored in as unemployed.
