Breaking Down U.S. Government Waste in 2014

As responsible taxpayers, we expect the government to be responsible in the way it uses our hard-earned money. There are various government watchdog organizations whose task it is to bring to the attention of the American public outrageous expenditures on the part of the U.S. federal government, but rather than prevent money from being wasted these organizations are usually more reactive rather than proactive. Below are just a few of the questionable expenditures that the U.S. government felt were justified in 2014.

  • To find out how those pesky rabbits can recover from exercise so quickly, the U.S. government wasted $387,000 to give said rabbits massages. Swedish massages.
  • The government spent over $330,000 to study the correlation of being hungry to stabbing a voodoo doll. No word on if one of the variables was using a voodoo doll with a likeness of members of the U.S. government’s budget committee.
  • The National Institute of Health wasted over $800,000 to make a video game about food fights. The NIH would probably like that money back to raise awareness about all of the heart attacks that resulted from news of such wasteful spending.
  • $18 million was spent to renovate a seldom-used airport located near a ski resort that is frequented by celebrities and financial tycoons because, you know, those are the people who make large campaign contributions.
  • The U.S. government wasted $171,000 to teach monkeys how to gamble. Rumor has it that the monkeys realized gambling was a bad idea and started to argue that they could do more good as members of Congress.

It certainly appears as though the $2.8 trillion our government will rake in from taxes this year is destined for more questionable spending. The U.S. government waste in 2014 could increase in 2015 with the more than $1 trillion spending bill that was just passed.
